Fortezza di Poggio Imperiale
Poggibonsi, Italy, Italy
Fortezza di Poggio Imperiale is a large Renaissance fortress that overlooks the town of Poggibonsi in Tuscany.
Commissioned by Lorenzo de’ Medici in the late 15th century and designed by the renowned architect Giuliano da Sangallo, it was built to strengthen Florence’s defenses against rival Siena and to showcase innovative military engineering. The fortress was part of an ambitious plan to create an ideal Renaissance city on the hill of Poggio Imperiale, but the project was never fully completed.
Even so, it became an important example of early modern fortification design, featuring advanced bastions and defensive structures adapted to the age of gunpowder artillery. Today, the fortress is a major historical and archaeological landmark. Visitors can explore its impressive walls, the pentagonal Cassero fortress, and the surrounding archaeological park, while enjoying panoramic views of the Tuscan countryside.
