Fortezza di Santa Barbara is a historic fortress in Pistoia, Tuscany, and one of the region’s most important examples of 16th-century military architecture.

Built on the orders of Cosimo I de’ Medici, it was constructed over the remains of an earlier medieval fortification and was designed to strengthen control over the city and adapt to the growing use of firearms in warfare. The fortress was developed by renowned military engineers, including Nanni Unghero, Giovanni Battista Bellucci, and Bernardo Buontalenti.

Its massive brick walls, bastions, and defensive structures reflect the advanced fortification techniques of the Renaissance period. Over the centuries, the fortress served as a military base, barracks, and prison, and it played a role in both the Italian Risorgimento and World War II.
