Fortezza Orsini
Sorano, Italy, Italy
Fortezza Orsini is a magnificent medieval and Renaissance fortress that dominates the hilltop village of Sorano in southern Tuscany.
Originally built as an Aldobrandeschi stronghold in the 12th century, it was later expanded by the powerful Orsini family, who turned it into one of the main centers of their territory and a key defensive fortress. Thanks to its strategic position, the fortress successfully withstood numerous attacks and sieges over the centuries.
In the 16th century it was further strengthened with advanced military features, helping control important routes across the Maremma region. Today, the restored complex is open to visitors and houses the Civic Archaeological Museum, which displays local artifacts and historical collections. Visitors can explore its courtyards, underground passages, towers, and fortifications while enjoying panoramic views of Sorano and the surrounding countryside.
