Fortezza Spagnola
Porto Santo Stefano, Italy, Italy
Fortezza Spagnola is a historic coastal fortress that overlooks the harbor of Porto Santo Stefano on the Monte Argentario peninsula in Tuscany.
Built by the Spanish between the late 16th and early 17th centuries as part of the State of the Presidi defensive network, it was designed to protect the town and surrounding coastline from attacks arriving by sea. The fortress features massive stone walls, defensive ramparts, lookout positions, and elevated terraces that reflect its long military history.
Over the centuries, it successfully served defensive purposes and was later strengthened during the Napoleonic era before being restored in modern times. Today, the fortress is one of Porto Santo Stefano’s most recognizable landmarks. Open to visitors, it hosts museum exhibits, including displays on underwater archaeology, and offers beautiful panoramic views of the harbor, the Tyrrhenian Sea, and the surrounding Argentario coastline.
