Fortezza Vecchia, or the Old Fortress, is a historic fortress in Livorno, Tuscany, located beside the city’s harbor.

Built in the early 16th century by the Medici family, it incorporates even older structures, including medieval Pisan fortifications and a tower traditionally associated with Countess Matilda of Tuscany, making it a monument that reflects many centuries of local history. The fortress played a crucial role in defending Livorno’s port and supporting the city’s growth as an important Mediterranean trading center.

Over time, it served military, administrative, and prison functions and witnessed many key events in Livorno’s development. Today, Fortezza Vecchia is one of Livorno’s most recognizable landmarks. Carefully restored after damage during World War II, it hosts cultural events, concerts, and exhibitions while offering visitors impressive architecture and panoramic views of the harbor and the Tyrrhenian Sea.
