Fortress of Girifalco
Cortona, Italy, Italy
The Fortress of Girifalco is a large hilltop fortress overlooking the town of Cortona in Tuscany.
Built on a site that may have been fortified since Etruscan times, the first documented fortress dates to the 13th century, and it was later expanded and rebuilt under Florentine and Medici rule to strengthen the region’s defenses. Its current appearance largely comes from the 16th century, when massive bastions and thick walls were added to withstand artillery warfare.
Although designed as a powerful military stronghold, the fortress was never heavily used in battle and gradually lost its strategic importance. Today, the Fortress of Girifalco is one of Cortona’s most important landmarks. Perched at the highest point of the town, it offers spectacular views across the Valdichiana and surrounding countryside while providing visitors with a fascinating look at centuries of military and architectural history.
