The Fortress of San Leo is one of Italy’s most impressive hilltop fortresses, dramatically set on a steep rocky outcrop overlooking the Valmarecchia valley in Emilia-Romagna.

Its origins date back to Roman times, but the fortress gained importance during the Middle Ages and Renaissance, serving as a key stronghold for rulers such as the Montefeltro family. Renowned for its seemingly impregnable position, it was later redesigned to withstand artillery and became one of the finest examples of Renaissance military architecture.

The fortress is also famous for having been the prison of the enigmatic Count Cagliostro, who died there in 1795. Today, it is a major historical attraction, offering spectacular views, museum exhibits, and a fascinating glimpse into Italy’s military and political past.
