Frauenberg Castle
Frauenberg, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany, Germany
Frauenberg Castle in Frauenberg, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany, is a 13th-century medieval ruin built by the Counts of Sponheim to guard the Nahe River crossing and their regional estates, first documented around 1330 as the widow's seat of Countess Loretta von Sponheim who resided there after ruling the county.
Reconstructed until 1330 with thick 2.5-meter walls and two surviving towers flanking the former access gate, it endured attacks by French soldiers in 1673 during which local defenders held out briefly before capture, followed by auctioning around 1800 under French administration and eventual state ownership by Rhineland-Palatinate.
The impressive remnants overlooking the valley offer public access year-round via hiking trails like the Huguenot and Waldensian path, blending history with scenic views in the Baumholder area.
