Frauenstein Castle
Frauenstein, Germany, Germany
Frauenstein Castle in Frauenstein, Germany, refers to the ruined medieval hill castle perched on a 680-meter granite rock in the Eastern Ore Mountains near the town of Frauenstein in Saxony, first mentioned in 1272 as a border fortification between Meissen and Bohemia.
Built around 1200 with a small inner ward, tower house, great hall, chapel, and later curtain wall, it protected trade routes and silver mines before passing to burgraves, then the von Schönberg family who abandoned it after 1588 for a nearby palace, leading to decay and a fire that left visible cannonballs from a 1438 siege.
Today, the atmospheric ruins offer panoramic views and hiking access amid lush forests, serving as a prominent landmark visible from afar.
