Freudenkoppe
Neroth, Germany, Germany
Freudenkoppe is the ruined medieval castle atop the Nerother Kopf, a 652-meter-high extinct volcanic cinder cone near Neroth in Germany's Vulkaneifel region, Rhineland-Palatinate.
Built between 1337 and 1340 by John the Blind, King of Bohemia and Count of Luxembourg, to secure borders against Trier's electors, it fell to them just six years later in 1346 and was abandoned by the mid-15th century.
The site features remnants of walls and a nearby Mühlstein Cave where the Nerother Wandervogel youth movement was founded on New Year's Eve 1919/1920; renovated in the 1980s, it's now a protected monument and hiking destination in the Volcanic Eifel Nature Park with panoramic views.
