Fürstbischöfliches Schloss
Dirmstein, Germany, Germany
Fürstbischöfliches Schloss in Dirmstein, Germany, served as the summer residence of the Prince-Bishops of Worms and the seat of a local winery estate within the Worms diocese, first documented in 1414 on the site of an earlier structure from 1240.
Originally a moated castle destroyed during the 1525 Peasants' War and rebuilt by Bishop Heinrich IV, it featured four corner towers—three removed between 1732-1743 due to decay, with one converted to a prison—before a 1885 fire claimed the southwest tower and outbuildings, leaving only the late-Baroque eastern Amtshaus from the early 18th century with Bishop Philipp I's (1595-1604) sandstone coat-of-arms.
Now privately owned as a farmstead near the Eckbach river on Hauptstraße at 102 meters elevation, its protected remnants beside the Romanesque St. Peter church form Dirmstein's oldest surviving castle, viewable only from outside.
