Gadamis, also spelled Ghadames or Ghadamès, is an ancient Berber‑influenced oasis town in the Nalut District of Tripolitania in northwestern Libya, often called “the pearl of the desert.”

It lies roughly 460–550 kilometers southwest of Tripoli near the borders with Algeria and Tunisia, in a wadi surrounded by the stony Hamra plateau and desert sands. The settlement dates back to Roman times, when it was known as Cydamus, and later served as a Christian bishopric under Byzantine rule before becoming an important hub on Trans‑Saharan trade routes under Arab and Islamic rule.

Its compact old town, enclosed by a defensive wall, is famous for its tightly packed, whitewashed mud‑brick and palm‑wood houses arranged in a vertical layout, with ground‑floor storerooms, family living space above, and rooftop terraces reserved for women, connected by shaded alleys and rooftop walkways.

This distinctive traditional architecture, designed to handle extreme heat and create privacy, earned the “Old Town of Ghadamès” UNESCO World Heritage status in 1986; the oasis currently supports a small population mainly of Berbers, supported by agriculture, crafts, and limited tourism.
