Galacha Tower (Shamil-Gala)

Galacha Tower, also known as Shamil‑Gala or Shamil Castle, is a round 19th‑century defensive tower built near the historic mountain village of İlisu in the Gakh (Qax) region of Azerbaijan, on the ridge of Mount Ezlidag high above the village and the Kurmukhchay River.

It was constructed in the early 19th century by Russian military forces during their advance into the Caucasus, as a countermeasure when Sultan Daniyal‑bek of the Ilisu Sultanate allied with Imam Shamil against Russian rule, and its elevated position was chosen to give Russian troops a strong observation and fire point over the surrounding area.

The tower is round in plan with a diameter of about 9.2 meters, consists of two tiers, and has rifle and cannon embrasures designed to fire with a steep downward slope so that attacking forces approaching up the steep mountain slopes could be targeted effectively, while the natural setting and sloping terrain made it very difficult to approach and effectively impregnable.
