Ordubad
Azerbaijan, Azerbaijan
Ordubad is the second-largest city in Azerbaijan's Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic and capital of its namesake district, nestled in the scenic Ordubad Gorge along the Aras River amid Zangezur mountains.
A medieval Silk Road caravan stop founded possibly by the 14th century—initially as Gala city on the Ordubadchay river's left bank—it features eastern feudal architecture, radial streets with neighborhood squares, mosques, baths, qanats (underground canals), and over 30 historic fountains supplying orchards and homes.
Passed from Persian to Russian control after the 1828 Treaty of Turkmenchay, it traded silk and dry fruits, blending northern and southern Azerbaijani traditions in its green, culturally rich setting.
