Verified Galey-Bughurt Castle

Azerbaijan, Azerbaijan

Galey-Bughurt Castle, also known as Galeyi Beygurt or simply Bughurt fortress, is a ruined medieval fortress located near Galeybughurd village about 20 kilometers northeast of Shamakhi in Azerbaijan, perched on a mountain summit at around 1,600 meters above sea level.

Believed to have been built in the 13th century and mentioned in 15th-century sources, the fortress follows the architectural style of the Shirvan-Absheron region and was constructed mainly from limestone, forming a strategic high-altitude stronghold that overlooked the surrounding valleys and mountain passes.

During the Mongol conquests and later conflicts, it served as a refuge for Shirvanshah rulers, including Shah Shaykhshah, who defended it in 1509, and later for Shahrukh and lawyer Hussein Bey, who resisted Safavid armies for several months in 1518 while the Shirvanshah treasury was kept inside.

Although some sources say that both Gulustan and Bughurt fortresses were destroyed by order of Shah Tahmasp, the use of Bughurt by Ottoman commanders during Süleyman the Magnificent’s campaigns shows that it remained operational until at least the late 17th century before gradually falling into ruin.
