Gamlehaugen
Bergen Municipality, Norway, Norway
Gamlehaugen is a royal residence in Bergen Municipality, Norway, serving as the official summer home for the Norwegian king and his family.
Dating back to medieval times as a farm site abandoned during the Black Death, it later became farmland owned by prominent Bergen families before shipping magnate and politician Christian Michelsen purchased it in 1898, demolished the old structure, and built the current Scottish baronial-style castle between 1900 and 1902.
After Michelsen's death in 1925, a national campaign funded its purchase by the state, opening the English-style park to the public that year and the ground floor as a museum in 1927, with the estate now featuring lavish interiors like a grand hall and music room while remaining a key historical landmark near Nordåsvannet lake.
