The Garden Alpinia, also known as the Giardino Botanico Alpinia, is an alpine botanical garden located in Alpino, a hamlet above Stresa in Piedmont, Italy, established in 1934 by Igino Ambrosini and Giuseppe Rossi.
It sits at an altitude of 800 meters on the slopes of Mount Mottarone overlooking Lake Maggiore, covering about 40,000 square meters. The garden specializes in alpine and subalpine plants, housing over 700 species primarily from the Alps and neighboring mountain ranges, with additional specimens from the Caucasus, China, and Japan.
The site features a landscaped circular path that offers visitors the choice of crossing through a forested area or flower garden before arriving at scenic viewpoints. A natural spring flowing from the summit of Mottarone mountain is a refreshing highlight. Known for its breathtaking panoramic views of Lake Maggiore, the Borromean Islands, and distant Alpine peaks, the Garden Alpinia combines rich botanical diversity with stunning landscapes and is one of Italy’s pioneering alpine botanical gardens.
