Prettin, Germany, Germany
Gedenkstätte KZ Lichtenburg Prettin is a memorial site in the Renaissance castle of Lichtenburg in Prettin, Saxony-Anhalt, Germany, commemorating one of Nazi Germany's earliest concentration camps opened in June 1933 for male political prisoners, which held a key role in the early camp system until its closure in 1937.
From 1937 to 1939, it functioned as the central women's concentration camp for the Reich, incarcerating around 2,000 women including political opponents and "asocials," before becoming an outer camp of Sachsenhausen from 1941 to 1945, where over 10,000 people suffered imprisonment, abuse, and death.
Established in 1965 and modernized with a new documentation center in 2011 under the Stiftung Gedenkstätten Sachsen-Anhalt, it preserves cells, a "bunker" for solitary confinement, and exhibits on victims' fates to educate about Nazi terror.
