Gemünden Castle
Gemünden, Rhein-Hunsrück, Germany, Germany
Gemünden Castle in Gemünden, Rhein-Hunsrück, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany, began as a medieval stronghold built around 1350 by the Counts of Sponheim on a rocky outcrop overlooking the town and Simmerbach valley.
Acquired in 1514 by Fritz von Schmidtburg from the Count Palatine of Simmern, it was expanded before suffering severe damage from explosions and fires during the 1689 Palatinate War of Succession, taking over 25 years to restore.
Rebuilt in early Baroque style between 1716-1728 with four prominent round towers on the old foundations, it passed through marriage in 1810 to the von Salis-Soglio family, who added 19th-century stables, and remains privately owned today as a residence not open to the public.
