Genovevaburg
Mayen, Germany, Germany
Genovevaburg is a late Gothic castle towering over Mayen in Germany's Rhineland-Palatinate, built around 1280 by Trier Archbishop Heinrich von Finstingen to secure his territories against rival Cologne electors.
Named after a legend linking the site to Genevieve of Brabant and her husband Count Palatine Siegfried, the fortress with its 34-meter Goloturm, upper and lower baileys, and basalt defenses endured nearly 400 years intact before French troops razed it in 1689 during the War of the Palatine Succession.
Repeatedly rebuilt in Baroque style, damaged by fire and WWII bombs, and restored through the 20th century, it now symbolizes the town while housing the Eifel Museum and slate mine exhibits.
