German Museum of Medicine History
Ingolstadt, Germany, Germany
The German Museum of Medical History (Deutsches Medizinhistorisches Museum) in Ingolstadt is Germany's first and only specialist museum devoted to European medicine, documenting the history of medicine from ancient times to the present day.
Founded in 1973 and housed in the baroque "Old Anatomy" building (constructed 1723–1736), this former anatomical theatre was the first new building for anatomical studies in the German-speaking world and served the former Bavarian State University until 1800.
After extensive renovation, the museum reopened in October 2020 with a newly designed permanent exhibition that emphasizes 18th-century medicine on the upper floor and highlights 21 significant "strong things" on the ground floor, alongside a medical technology department covering 2,000 years of urinary stone therapy.
The collection includes medical instruments, anatomical models, pharmaceutical artifacts, and anatomical preparations displayed in the former "Theatrum anatomicum," while visitors can also explore a medicinal plant garden with scent and touch stations on the site of the university's former botanical garden. Admission is €5.50 for adults (free for students and children under 18), and the museum is open Tuesday through Sunday from 10:00 to 17:00, closed on Mondays.
