Gewächshäuser Botanischer Garten Berlin
Berlin, Germany, Germany
The Gewächshäuser (greenhouses) of the Botanischer Garten Berlin are a collection of 15 show greenhouses located in Berlin-Steglitz that showcase the fascinating plant world of the tropics and subtropics, and are part of one of the world's largest and most species-rich botanical gardens spanning 43 hectares with nearly 20,000 plant species.
The centerpiece is the Great Tropical House (Großes Tropenhaus), built between 1905–1907 by architect Alfred Koerner, which is among the world's most significant and largest greenhouses and immerses visitors in the plant world between the Caribbean and Southeast Asia with palms, giant bamboo (Riesenbambus), and lianas, some of which are over 150 years old. The left side of the Great Tropical House is dedicated to the American tropics while the right side represents the flora of tropical Africa, Asia, and Australia, and the entire house is accessible year-round in subtropical climate and is barrier-free.
Surrounding the Great Tropical House are 14 other specialized greenhouses that can be explored in a continuous round tour without leaving the buildings, including houses for bromeliads, orchids, tropical ferns, African succulents, cacti, carnivorous plants, Australia, South Africa, Mediterranean plants, and the over-100-year-old romantic Victoria House (Viktoria-Haus) named after Queen Victoria.
