Ghahghaheh Castle (also spelled Qahqaheh, Qezhghah, or Ghah Ghāh Ghālāsi in local speech) is a mountain fortress located about 85 kilometers northeast of Meshgin Shahr in the Moradlu Arshaq district of Ardabil Province, northwestern Iran, perched high above the surrounding terrain with an elevation of roughly 300 meters.

Archaeologists attribute its original construction to the pre‑Islamic period, possibly the Parthian or Sassanid era, when it served as a military outpost, but it became especially significant during the Safavid dynasty (1501–1736), when it was repurposed as a royal treasury and a notorious jail for political prisoners and high‑ranking captives, including Safavid princes such as Ismail Mirza (later Ismail II), who was imprisoned there for 19 years for disobeying his father, Tahmasp I.

The castle’s name, Ghahghaheh, is said to mean both “a loud sound of laughing” and “the song of the partridge,” and its remote, steep location made access difficult; the only climbing route is the northeast path, which takes about an hour to reach the top, and water was supplied by storing rain and snow in hand‑dug reservoirs and holding rooms, including four large reservoirs in the northeast and eleven storage areas on the western side.
