Giardini Botanici Hanbury
Latte, Italy, Italy
The Giardini Botanici Hanbury, also known as Villa Hanbury or La Mortola, are major botanical gardens operated by the University of Genoa, located at Corso Montecarlo 43 in La Mortola Inferiore, several kilometers west of Ventimiglia near the French-Italian border in Liguria, Italy.
Founded in 1867 by English businessman and traveler Sir Thomas Hanbury, who was inspired by his passion for plants and his success in exporting tea from China, the gardens cover 18 hectares on the dramatic Promontorio della Mortola cliff sloping down to the Mediterranean Sea, making them one of the most important and famous acclimatization gardens for exotic plants in the world.
The park features approximately 5,800 to 6,000 botanical species from tropical and subtropical regions across five continents, including cacti, palm groves, citrus orchards, the Australian Forest rich in eucalyptus, acacia collections, bamboo, succulent plants, the Garden of Fragrances, Italian-style small gardens with roses and peonies, an orange grove with ancient citrus varieties, and an exotic fruit orchard.
