The Giardino Botanico in Veneto, Italy, most notably represented by the Orto Botanico di Padova (Padua Botanical Garden), was founded in 1545 by the Venetian Republic and is the oldest academic botanical garden still in its original location.

It was established to cultivate medicinal plants used for natural remedies and to help students accurately identify these plants, reducing the risk of harmful misidentifications. The garden’s layout follows a historic design symbolizing the relationship between nature and culture, featuring a circular central plot divided by cardinal paths.

It houses over 3,500 species and more than 6,000 plant specimens, including rare and exotic plants introduced over centuries, such as lilacs, sunflowers, potatoes, and ginkgo trees. The garden is a UNESCO World Heritage site and continues to function as a center for botanical research, education, and preservation, with historic trees and structures testament to its centuries-old legacy of scientific advancement and cultural importance.
