Giardino diffuso della Majella
San Valentino in Abruzzo Citeriore, Province of Pescara, Italy, Italy
The Giardino Diffuso della Majella (Dispersed Garden of the Majella) is an innovative environmental project in San Valentino in Abruzzo Citeriore, a charming village nestled at 450 meters elevation at the foot of the Majella and Morrone mountains within Parco Nazionale della Majella.
The initiative consists of a network of small gardens—currently 15 scattered across village centers and school courtyards—each featuring native wild plants and spontaneous flora that require minimal maintenance. The first garden inaugurated in May 2024 at Belvedere San Nicola spans about 400 square meters and includes a path through over 130 botanical species, mostly spontaneous local plants.
The project builds on the experience of existing botanical gardens Daniela Brescia in Sant'Eufemia a Maiella and Michele Tenore in Lama dei Peligni, aiming to preserve biodiversity, promote appreciation of autochthonous flora, and sensitize local communities—not just schools—to environmental themes and care for shared spaces.
The gardens showcase the Majella Park's environmental and historical-cultural characteristics while experimenting with new urban green space design and management, and the dispersed garden path is also available in virtual version created by the municipality of San Valentino in Abruzzo Citeriore.
