Giebichenstein Castle
Halle, Germany, Germany
Giebichenstein Castle is a medieval fortress on the Saale River's high bank in Halle (Saale)'s Giebichenstein district, Saxony-Anhalt, Germany, first documented in 961 as a Reichsburg and principal residence for Magdeburg's archbishops until 1503.
Originating as a 9th-century Burgward under Emperor Otto I, it features Romanesque remnants like the upper castle's gate tower and vaulted cellars rebuilt in the 12th century, with Gothic expansions including a residential tower and lower castle added in the 15th century.
Badly damaged in 1636 during the Thirty Years' War, its ruins now host the Burg Giebichenstein Art Academy, an architectural museum from 1960s excavations, and cultural events overlooking the river valley.
