Granitz Hunting Castle
Binz, Germany, Germany
Granitz Hunting Castle, located near Binz on Germany's Rügen Island, is a picturesque 19th-century Renaissance-style hunting lodge built between 1838 and 1846 by Prince Wilhelm Malte I of Putbus on the 107-meter-high Tempelberg amid a vast beech forest.
Designed by Berlin architect Johann Gottfried Steinmeyer with a later 38-meter central tower by Karl Friedrich Schinkel featuring a dramatic 154-step cast-iron spiral staircase, it once hosted European nobility like Otto von Bismarck before becoming a state-owned museum after World War II.
Today, it draws over 200,000 visitors yearly for exhibits on the Putbus family, panoramic views over Rügen and the Baltic Sea, weddings in its marble hall, and nearby forest trails in the biosphere reserve.
