Greene Castle
Einbeck, Germany, Germany
Greene Castle, also known as Greener Burg, is a small medieval hilltop castle ruin in the village of Greene, now part of the town of Einbeck in Lower Saxony, Germany.
It was originally built in 1308 by the noble family von Homburg and later became a ducal administrative seat in the 15th century, repeatedly damaged in local conflicts and then rebuilt in an expanded form before gradually falling into decay from the 17th century onward.
Today only partial outer walls, the reconstructed tower (Bergfried), and the arched gate to the upper ward survive, giving visitors a clear idea of the former castle’s layout while the tower itself offers a fine view over the Leine valley.
The site is now a local heritage monument and an open‑air history spot, with the tower used as a memorial for German prisoners of war from the Second World War and the surrounding grounds maintained for public visits and guided tours.
