Grevenburg Castle Ruins
Traben-Trarbach, Germany, Germany
Grevenburg Castle Ruins tower above the picturesque town of Traben-Trarbach along Germany's Moselle River in Rhineland-Palatinate, built around 1350 by Count Johann III of Sponheim-Starkenburg as the new residence for the Rear County of Sponheim, replacing the older Starkenburg.
This strategic hilltop fortress changed hands 13 times during 17th- and 18th-century wars, enduring conquests by Louis XIV in 1680, Marlborough's forces in 1704, and final destruction by French troops in 1734 during the War of the Polish Succession, when it was deliberately blown up with massive chunks tumbling into the valley below.
Today, the atmospheric remnants—including the western keep wall and largely intact foundations—host a cozy tavern and garden with stunning panoramic views over the Moselle's horseshoe bend, accessible via a rewarding 25-minute steep hike from town.
