Grillenburg (Harz)
Sangerhausen, Germany, Germany
Grillenburg is a medieval castle ruin located near the village of Grillenberg, in the district of Mansfeld-Südharz, Saxony-Anhalt, Germany, close to the Harz Mountains.
First mentioned in records dating back to 1217, it was originally built around 1200 as a fortified knight's estate using large red sandstone blocks. The castle complex included a pentagonal main castle with a palace, surrounded by an outer wall with half-towers and two additional forecourts protected by ditches and embankments. It underwent a significant Gothic-style expansion in the 14th century evident in its distinctive red brickwork.
Ownership of the castle passed through various noble families over the centuries, including the Muser and von Morungen families, and later the Margrave of Meissen acquired it in the mid-14th century. The castle lost its strategic importance by the early 17th century and gradually fell into ruin.
Nearby, the village of Grillenberg, part of the municipality of Sangerhausen, has a documented history going back to the 9th century and is known as a state-recognized resort with cultural significance tied to the region's mining heritage and natural beauty in the Harz area. The castle ruins stand as a prominent historical landmark within the Harz Nature Park, attracting visitors with its architectural remnants and scenic location.
