Grimburg
Germany, Germany
Grimburg Castle is a vast medieval ruin crowning the Kittelaufberg spur near Grimburg in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany, constructed around 1150 by the noble Edelherren von Saarbrücken and rebuilt after destruction in the 1183-1190 Trier Schism.
One of the largest fortresses in the Archbishopric of Trier's domain—spanning 300 by 90 meters—it served as the administrative seat for nearly 40 Hochwald communities from the 13th century, featuring a rectangular bergfried keep, palas hall, outer bailey, and a dual-level chapel for commoners below and officials above.
Damaged in the Thirty Years' War and deliberately burned by French forces in 1683 during the Reunion Wars, it was abandoned around 1690, later quarried for local building; restored since 1978 with reconstructed towers including the Hexen- and Küchenturm, it now stands as a hiking destination and cultural monument.
