Verified Grünwald Castle

Grünwald, Germany

Grünwald Castle in Grünwald, Germany, has origins that likely trace back to a Roman watchtower on the Isar River and was documented as a possession of the Counts of Andechs in the 12th century.

It later came under the control of the Wittelsbach family in the late 13th century and served as a ducal residence and hunting lodge. The current structure mainly dates from extensive renovations in the late 15th century to celebrate a ducal wedding, with notable residents including Louis X, Duke of Bavaria, who was born there. The castle played a significant historical role in 1522 by hosting the Grünwald Conference, which shaped the Counter-Reformation in Bavaria.

It was later used as a prison and powder magazine, suffered damage due to the nearby river undermining its foundations, and was partially demolished in the 17th and 18th centuries. After a period of private ownership, the castle was acquired by the Free State of Bavaria in 1976 and now houses the Museum Grünwald, a branch of the Bavarian State Archaeological Collection.

Visitors can explore the medieval architecture, the museum exhibits, and enjoy views from the castle tower while learning about medieval Bavarian life and local history.
