Gscheibter Turm
Italy, Italy
Gscheibter Turm, also known as Torre Druso, is the surviving keep of the former Treuenstein Castle on the northern edge of Bolzano in South Tyrol.
Built in the late 13th century, it originally formed part of a larger medieval fortress that guarded an important route near the entrance to the Sarntal Valley. The tall, circular stone tower was designed primarily for defense rather than residence. Its thick walls, lack of windows, and elevated entrance reflect its military purpose, while traces of the castle’s former walls can still be seen at its base.
Over the centuries, most of the castle disappeared, leaving only the tower standing as a landmark. Today, the Gscheibter Turm remains a distinctive reminder of Bolzano’s medieval past and is one of the city’s most recognizable historic structures.
