Gulustan Fortress (Shamakhi)
Azerbaijan, Azerbaijan
Gulustan Fortress in Shamakhi, Azerbaijan, dates back to the 9th-12th centuries and was a significant stronghold of the Shirvanshahs dynasty.
The fortress is perched about 190-200 meters above the surrounding land, built on mountain slopes with defensive walls and a citadel on top, surrounded by natural cliffs on three sides. It functioned as a refuge and second residence for the Shirvanshahs and included a palace complex with advanced features like clay water pipes and an underground passage.
The fortress was a key military site resisting various sieges, including those by the Safavid armies in the 16th century, and was eventually destroyed in 1547 after prolonged conflicts. Ruins such as round and quadrangular walls and towers remain, bearing witness to its medieval architectural and defensive significance in the region’s history.
