Gunlogson State Nature Preserve, located within Icelandic State Park near Cavalier Air Force Station in North Dakota, was established in 1963 when G. B. Gunlogson donated 200 acres of his family’s land to the state, making it North Dakota’s first dedicated state nature preserve.

The preserve features diverse and varied terrain including forests with mature bur oak and basswood, spring-fed wetlands, marshes, meadows, upland prairie, ponds, and the Tongue River flowing through the area. It is home to more than a dozen rare plant species such as ladyfern and showy lady’s slipper, and rare animals including the pileated woodpecker and mourning warbler.

The preserve's setting showcases a mix of eastern deciduous and boreal aquatic species that are uncommon in the region, reflecting a living link between the land’s pre-settlement condition and the present. Trails for hiking and cross-country skiing provide public access to experience this rich biodiversity and scenic natural environment throughout the year.
