Gurdwara Kartarpur Sahib
Narowal, Punjab, Pakistan
Gurdwara Darbar Sahib Kartarpur, often simply called Kartarpur Sahib, is one of the holiest sites in Sikhism. Located in the town of Kartarpur in Narowal District, Punjab, Pakistan, it marks the final resting place of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the founder of Sikhism. After his extensive missionary travels, Guru Nanak settled here in 1522 and spent the last 18 years of his life farming, meditating, and teaching the principles of equality, service, and devotion to God.
The gurdwara stands on the banks of the Ravi River, just a few kilometers from the India-Pakistan border. It’s revered not only for its spiritual significance but also for its symbolism of peace and interfaith harmony. In 2019, the Kartarpur Corridor was inaugurated, allowing Indian Sikh pilgrims visa-free access to the shrine—a historic gesture that bridged decades of longing and separation.
Architecturally, the gurdwara is a blend of Mughal and Sikh styles, with white marble domes, expansive courtyards, and a serene atmosphere that invites reflection. It’s said to be one of the largest gurdwaras in the world, and the site includes a museum, library, and langar hall where free meals are served to all visitors. The story of Guru Nanak’s passing here is steeped in legend.
When he died in 1539, both Hindus and Muslims claimed him as their own and disagreed over his final rites. According to tradition, when they lifted the cloth covering his body, they found only fresh flowers, which were then divided and honored according to each faith’s customs.
