Güstrow Palace
Güstrow, Germany, Germany
Güstrow Palace in Güstrow, Germany, is one of northern Germany's finest Renaissance castles, built starting in 1558 by Duke Ulrich of Mecklenburg to replace a medieval fortress destroyed by fire.
Architect Franciscus Pahr crafted its distinctive four-wing layout blending Italian, French, and German styles, with later additions like the north wing by Philipp Brandin (1587-1591), east wing by Claus Midow (1594), and Baroque gatehouse by Charles Philippe Dieussart in 1657.
Used as a ducal residence until the 17th century—including by Wallenstein in 1628—and later as a farmhouse and hospital, it was restored from 1963-1978 and now serves as a museum showcasing Mecklenburg history amid its scenic grounds.
