Gut Emkendorf
Emkendorf, Germany, Germany
Gut Emkendorf is a grand historic manor estate in Emkendorf, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany, first mentioned in 1190 and once the largest in the region during 16th-century Rantzau ownership, spanning numerous villages, farms, and lakes as a patrimonial court until Prussian takeover in 1867.
Built around 1730 in late Baroque style by banker Jean Henri Desmercières—who hosted King Friedrich V in 1745—it was acquired by the Reventlow family in 1764, with Friedrich Karl and Julia Schimmelmann transforming it into neoclassical splendor by 1789 via architects and artists, remaining theirs until 1929 sale to publisher Dr. Curt Heinrich's family.
The symmetrical complex features a preserved Herrenhaus, outbuildings, and English landscape park with Hasensee, now a renowned venue for the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival amid ongoing restoration.
