Gut Gelting
Gelting, Germany
Gut Gelting, often referred to as Schloss Gelting, is a historic estate situated in the village of Gelting in Schleswig-Holstein, northern Germany.
The impressive three-winged manor complex features a grand courtyard and is encircled by remnants of a medieval moat and four bastions, reflecting its defensive origins. The property was first recorded in 1231 in the Liber Census Daniae, a document listing the possessions of Danish King Valdemar II, under the name “Gyælting.”
Over the centuries, it passed through several noble families, including the von Ahlefeldts, who acquired it in 1494, and later the von Hobe-Gelting family, who still own it today. Architectural elements from different periods are visible, with the eastern wing and its round tower dating back to medieval times. In 1925, a chapel was added inside the estate, with the altar placed in the historic tower and the chapel rooms located in the eastern wing.
Although Gut Gelting remains a private property and is not open to the public, it stands as a well-preserved example of Schleswig-Holstein’s aristocratic heritage, surrounded by scenic countryside near the Baltic Sea coast.
