Gut Hemmelmark
Barkelsby, Germany, Germany
Gut Hemmelmark is a historic manor estate in Barkelsby near Eckernförde, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany, originally owned by the noble Sehestedt family until confiscated by the Danish crown in 1527, then passing through various owners.
In 1894, Prince Heinrich of Prussia, brother of Kaiser Wilhelm II, purchased it as a country retreat and rebuilt the Herrenhaus from 1902-1904 in English country house style, adding modern luxuries like central heating, elevators, electricity from a private power station, and over 120 rooms overlooking Hemmelmarker See.
After World War II use as a British requisition, old age home, and school, it became privately owned and remains a picturesque, privately accessible landmark today.
