Gut Knoop
Altenholz, Germany, Germany
Gut Knoop is a historic aristocratic manor estate in Altenholz, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany, first documented in 1322 and named after its founder Lupus de Knope, featuring a 16th-century water castle later replaced by a neoclassical Herrenhaus built from 1792-1800 by architect Axel Bundsen for Caroline von Baudissin.
Influenced by Schloss Wörlitz with its rational French revolutionary architecture, portikus, and lavish interiors by artists like Ludwig Philipp Strack, it overlooked the Eider Canal in a landscape park largely destroyed by the 1895 Kiel Canal construction, serving as a cultural hub alongside Gut Emkendorf around 1800.
Owned by families like Baudissin, Danish merchant Ingward Martin Clausen from 1869, and since 1903 the Hirschfelds—who manage it today as a fourth-generation family-run operation with horse boarding and event hosting—it remains a prime example of regional Classicism.
