Gut Marutendorf
Achterwehr, Germany
Gut Marutendorf is a historic estate located near Achterwehr in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany, within the scenic Westensee Nature Park.
Its origins trace back to 1309, when it belonged to the knightly Marute family, who built a water castle on the site. In the early 16th century, the estate transitioned from a feudal manor into an agricultural estate. After the Marute line died out, ownership passed through several noble families, including the von Rantzau, von Ahlefeldt, von Rumohr, and later the Counts of Kielmansegg, Schimmelmann, and Wedderkop.
In 1788, Peter Anton acquired the property and constructed the single-storey manor house that still stands today. The estate later came into the possession of the Schreiber family (known as von Cronstern) in 1822 and eventually was inherited by the Counts von Plessen. Following World War II, land reforms divided the estate’s holdings, and it evolved into a modern, biologically oriented farm.
Today, Gut Marutendorf serves as both a working estate and an event venue offering charming spaces for weddings, family gatherings, and retreats. The property also provides guest accommodations in converted historic buildings, maintaining its rural elegance surrounded by lakes and forests near the town of Kiel.
