Hackfalls Arboretum
Tiniroto, New Zealand, New Zealand
Hackfalls Arboretum is a world-class arboretum located at 187 Berry Road in Tiniroto, a small rural settlement near Gisborne on New Zealand's East Coast between Gisborne and Wairoa. Founded by farmer Bob Berry, who developed a special interest in trees for their botanical interest and beauty and concentrated on growing oak trees, particularly Mexican oaks, the arboretum is now home to over 3,000 to 3,500 species and varieties of oaks, alders, cherries, magnolias, maples, and more rare trees and shrubs growing across 50 hectares (100 acres). The collection of evergreen and semi-evergreen Mexican oak species is considered the largest private collection of oaks in the Southern Hemisphere and the world. In 1993, Hackfalls Arboretum was made a charitable trust, and four hectares of the original forest together with the arboretum have been protected by a Queen Elizabeth II Trust covenant since 1985. The property is also a working sheep and cattle station, allowing visitors to experience this flourishing arboretum within a picturesque East Coast farm setting, while the gardens around the homestead cover about half an acre.
