Halsnøy kloster
Halsnøy Abbey, Norway, Norway
Halsnøy Abbey, located on Halsnøy island in Sunnhordland near Bergen, Norway, was founded around 1163-1164 by powerful jarl Erling Skakke as an Augustinian canons' house to secure Archbishop Øystein's support for crowning his young son Magnus Erlingsson king. One of medieval Norway's richest monasteries thanks to generous endowments, it controlled vast lands across western Norway and was rebuilt in Gothic style around 1300 after a major fire, thriving until the 1536 Reformation dissolved it with Crown confiscation. Post-dissolution as a noble estate under families like the Juels, most monastic structures were demolished by 1840 for a new farmhouse, but Sunnhordland Museum has preserved unique ancillary ruins—rare survivors alongside Selje and Hovedøya—offering a glimpse into daily monastic life amid scenic fjord fields.
