Handaberd is a 9th-century fortress located in the Kalbajar District of Azerbaijan, near the villages of Lev and Knaravan, situated on a high mountain ridge above the Ayrım Gorge by the Levçay River. It was built by Prince Atrnerseh I of the Armenian Principality of Khachen and served as his residence and a prison.
The fortress features thick stone walls, several wells for water storage, and a single main entrance, surrounded by steep rocks and forest. It was expanded over centuries and is associated with Armenian medieval history, including inscriptions from local princes and connections to nearby monasteries. The fortress, now in ruins, holds historical significance for Azerbaijan and offers scenic views from its mountainous location.
