Harvey Butler Rhododendron Sanctuary
Sanford, Maine, United States
The Harvey Butler Rhododendron Sanctuary is a small, wild‑flower‑focused nature preserve near Sanford, Maine, located just off Route 11A in the neighboring village of Springvale.
It is a gently sloping 30‑ to 56‑acre woodland site managed by the Native Plant Trust that protects one of the largest and rarest stands of great laurel rhododendron (Rhododendron maximum) in the state, a species that is at the northern edge of its range here.
The sanctuary centers on a roughly 5‑acre rhododendron grove that blooms in late June to mid‑July, surrounded by a diverse mix of native plants such as yellow blue‑bead lily, painted trillium, spicebush, and sheep‑laurel along easy, short trails that are usually self‑guided and free to visit.
The area also borders a red‑maple swamp and wet meadow, which turn brilliant in the fall, making it a quiet, seasonal destination for wildflower lovers and native‑plant enthusiasts rather than a developed park or tourist attraction.
