Haynsburg
Germany, Germany
Haynsburg is a well-preserved medieval castle ruin near Wetterzeube in Saxony-Anhalt, Germany, first documented in 1185 under Conradus de Hagensberg and described as a fortified site by 1238.
Acquired by the Bishops of Naumburg-Zeitz in 1305, it served as their strongest stronghold, guarding imperial hunting grounds at Kayna and controlling key high roads plus Elster River fords.
Featuring a massive round bergfried tower from around 1100 with 4.5-meter-thick walls, it withstood sieges like the 1450 Saxon Fratricidal War, later expanded under bishops and now maintained as a local heritage site with a tavern, museum exhibits, and hiking paths.
