Haywood Community College Arboretum in Clyde, North Carolina, was established in 1977 as part of the college’s campus and has grown into a 120-acre botanical collection.
Designed under the guidance of landscape architect Doan Ogden, it features a diverse array of native and exotic trees, shrubs, and ground cover, totaling over 400 plant species and more than 250 varieties. The arboretum includes recreational and educational facilities like walking trails, a historic grist mill dating back to 1756, which symbolizes community heritage and progress, and gardens dedicated to dahlias, rhododendrons, and native plants.
It is used as a living laboratory for students studying forestry, horticulture, and natural resources, providing hands-on learning experiences.
