Verified Heidelberg Botanical Garden

Heidelberg, Germany , Germany

The Botanical Garden of the University of Heidelberg (Botanischer Garten Heidelberg) is a 2-hectare botanical garden maintained by the University of Heidelberg, located at Im Nehlenheimer Feld 340 on the university's New Campus in Heidelberg, Baden-Württemberg, Germany.

Founded in 1593 as a medicinal garden (hortus medicus) for the university, it is the third oldest botanical garden in Germany and among the oldest in the world, though it has moved seven times since its establishment. The current site was created in 1915 by botanist Georg Albrecht Klebs and head gardener Erich Behnick, and after severe damage during World War II, it was rebuilt to house over 14,000 plant taxa today.

The garden's primary focus is its extensive greenhouse collections spanning 4,000 square meters, with special strengths in succulents, orchids, and bromeliads, including 11 special collections such as tropical orchids (3,510 species), succulents from Madagascar and the Old/New Worlds, and carnivorous plants. Outdoor sections feature an alpine garden, fern ravine, inland dune, bog and heath plants, and a systematic collection.
